From Our Family to Yours: Why We’re Passionate About Documenting Family Milestones in New Hampshire and Beyond

From Our Family to Yours: Why We’re Passionate About Documenting Family Milestones in New Hampshire and Beyond

March 5, 2026

The limited photos we post and share with our families often seem perfect and effortless. Even just last year, we took some outdoor photos with a beautiful green landscape behind and lucked out with both of the kids smiling and looking at the camera.

Well… what the photo doesn’t show is that ten minutes prior, one of our kids had a meltdown, and the other was trying interested in just about anything else, and we were both wondering if we should just call the whole thing off.

As a husband-and-wife photography team with two kids of our own, we get it. We really get it. At D&S Photo, we know that “Family Photo Day” often feels like a high-stakes marathon. But we also know that when you look at that photo ten years from now, you won’t remember the tantrum. You’ll remember how small their hand felt in yours.

Why We Do What We Do

We started D&S Photo because we realized that time in the Northeast moves in seasons—and those seasons go by fast. One minute you’re navigating the newborn haze in a quiet Manchester studio session, and the next, you’re scouting the best spots in the White Mountains for senior portraits.

We aren’t just photographers; we are professional toddler-wranglers, joke-tellers, and “stray hair” fixers. We’ve learned that the best family milestones aren’t captured by forcing everyone to sit still and say “cheese.” They’re captured when we let your family be a family.

Embracing the Chaos (From Experience!)

Our two children have taught us more about photography than any manual ever could. They taught us:

  • Patience is a superpower: If a child needs five minutes to explore a trail in Franconia Notch before they’re ready to smile, we take those five minutes.

  • The “In-Between” is the Goal: Sometimes the best shot isn’t the one for the Christmas card; it’s the one of Mom laughing because the toddler just whispered something ridiculous.

  • Comfort Matters: Whether we’re in our controlled, cozy studio or out on the windy NH Seacoast, your family’s comfort is our priority. If you’re stressed, the camera sees it. Our job is to take that weight off your shoulders.

Over time, we even developed our own Guide to Your Next Children’s Photo Session to help you prepare, partially because we would’ve loved to have these tips ourselves beforehand.

Documenting Milestones Across the Northeast

While New Hampshire is our home base, our passion for storytelling takes us all over the Northeast. We believe every family has a “geographic soulmate” location.

  • For the Adventurers: We love the scale of the White Mountains. There’s something about a family standing against that vast landscape that reminds us how big the world is and how tight-knit a family can be.

  • For the Traditionalists: Our studio sessions offer a timeless, distraction-free environment. No wind, no mud, just your family’s connection.

  • For the Dreamers: The Lakes Region and the Seacoast offer a sense of play. Splashing in the water or walking the docks at sunset brings out a natural, relaxed energy that is impossible to fake.

Our Promise to Your Family

When you book a session with us, you’re inviting another family into your circle for an hour. We treat that invitation with the respect it deserves. We promise to find the light, handle the logistics, and navigate the “kid chaos” with a smile—because we’ve been there. It may seem crazy, but not only do we love it, we thrive in it.

We aren’t just taking pictures; we’re documenting the milestones that make up your life’s work. From our family to yours, we can’t wait to see what memories we can capture together.

Capturing the Granite State: Why We Love Being Your New Hampshire Photographers

Capturing the Granite State: Why We Love Being Your New Hampshire Photographers

March 4, 2026

There is something about the light in New Hampshire that you just can’t find anywhere else. Whether it’s the way the sun dips behind the White Mountains,  or the salty mist clinging to the rocky coast in Rye, this state is truly a photographer’s playground.

We’re D&S Photo—a husband-and-wife team lucky enough to call this beautiful corner of New England home. If you’re looking for a New Hampshire photographer, you’ve likely realized there’s no shortage of talent here. But for us, photography isn’t just about a high-end lens or a perfectly timed shutter click. It’s about the stories told against the backdrop of the places we love.

The Heart Behind D&S Photo

When we started D&S Photo, we wanted to build something that reflected our own journey. As a couple (and now a family), we know that the best photos aren’t always the ones where everyone is looking at the camera and smiling perfectly. They’re the “in-between” moments: the way a groom exhales when he finally sees his bride, or the chaotic, giggly energy of a family trying to keep their toddler from running toward the lake.

Working as a duo allows us to be in two places at once—capturing the grand landscape and the tiny, intimate details simultaneously. It means when you book our full team, you’re getting two perspectives, two sets of eyes, and one shared passion for making sure your memories feel as real on paper as they did in the moment.

That’s exactly how we continue to blend storytelling with spontaneity.

Our Favorite New Hampshire Photo Locations

One of the best parts of our job is playing tour guide. We are constantly scouting the state for the perfect light. If you’re planning a session, here are a few of our absolute favorite spots that truly capture the NH spirit:

  1. The Seacoast (Portsmouth & Rye): From the historic brick alleyways of downtown Portsmouth to the rugged shoreline of Odiorne Point State Park, the seacoast offers incredible variety. We love the “surf and turf” vibe of Great Island Common, where you can get woodsy forest shots and lighthouse backdrops in a single walk.

  2. The White Mountains: For those who don’t mind a little adventure, places like Echo Lake or the scenic overlooks along the Kancamagus Highway provide a dramatic, epic scale that is hard to beat, especially during peak foliage.

  3. Lakes Region Charms: Lake Winnipesaukee and Squam Lake offer that classic New England summer feel. Think docks, sunset reflections on the water, and a relaxed, barefoot atmosphere that makes for stunning family portraits.

What to Expect When Working With Us

We know that being in front of a camera can feel… well, awkward. Most of our clients start their session by saying, “We’re not good at having our picture taken.” Honestly, we’re guilty of this ourselves when we’re not behind the camera. Trust us—nobody feels like a natural at first!

Our approach is low-pressure and high-fun. We don’t just “pose” you; we give you prompts to interact with each other. We’ll ask you to tell a secret, go for a stroll, or even have a mini-dance party. By the time we’re twenty minutes in, our goal is that you’ll forget the camera is even there. That is when the magic happens, no matter which of our services you choose.

Investing in Your Memories

Why choose a local New Hampshire photographer over a big national chain? Because we care about the legacy of these images in our community. We know the local weather quirks (looking at you, unpredictable mountain rain!), we know the secret parking spots at the busy beaches, and we’re invested in making sure our neighbors have heirlooms they can pass down for generations.

Whether you’re celebrating an engagement, updating your family gallery, or capturing a milestone, we’d love to be the ones behind the lens with the honor of telling your story.

Why Senior Portraits Matter (and Where to Book Them in New Hampshire)

Why Senior Portraits Matter (and Where to Book Them in New Hampshire)

By: David Hamilton

Date: July 19, 2025

Senior year is a once-in-a-lifetime milestone—and senior portraits are more than just yearbook photos. They’re a celebration of personality, style, growth, and the exciting transition to adulthood. Whether you’re a student or a proud parent in Manchester, Bedford, Hooksett, or Goffstown, now is the perfect time to book a session and capture this unforgettable chapter.

As a senior portrait photographer based near Manchester, NH, we focus on creating fun, authentic, and meaningful portraits that reflect each student’s unique personality. Here’s why investing in a senior photo session is 100% worth it—and how to get the most out of it.

1. Capture Who You Are Right Now

Your senior year marks the end of one chapter and the beginning of another. Whether you’re involved in sports, music, drama, or just want to express your personality, a custom senior portrait session is a time capsule of who you are at this pivotal moment.

From cap and gown shots to creative wardrobe changes, and even items or props with sentimental value, your session is about telling your story—your way.

2. Stand Out in the Yearbook

Sure, schools often offer basic yearbook photo packages—but they’re usually rushed, limited, and don’t offer much room for creativity.

A professional senior session allows you to take your time, choose your favorite outfit(s), and be photographed in locations that mean something to you. The result? Photos that truly stand out and make a lasting impression.

3. Choose Iconic Local Photo Spots

Manchester and the surrounding area offer so many beautiful and unique backdrops for senior portraits. Some of my top location picks for senior photo sessions include:

  • Livingston Park – classic New England foliage and walking trails

  • Benedictine Park – wide open fields and skies
  • Downtown Manchester – urban vibes with murals and brick backdrops

  • Bedford Village Common – peaceful green spaces and charming bridges

  • Lake Massabesic – for golden hour portraits near the water

  • Goffstown Rail Trail – rustic charm with wooded paths and open skies

Choosing a familiar or meaningful location can make the session feel even more personal and memorable.

4. A Confidence-Boosting Experience

Many seniors walk into their session feeling nervous, unsure how to pose, or worried they’ll feel awkward. But here’s the thing: senior portraits are all about making you feel confident and celebrated.

With professional posing guidance, great lighting, and a relaxed atmosphere, you’ll walk away not just with amazing photos—but with a serious boost of confidence.

5. Perfect for Graduation Announcements, Gifts & Keepsakes

Senior portraits aren’t just for social media (though they’re great for that, too!). You’ll be able to use them for:

  • Graduation announcements
  • Custom photo albums
  • Framed gifts for family
  • Thank-you cards
  • College applications and social profiles

Your future self (and your family) will be so glad you took the time to document this moment. We’ve never met a family that regretted having nice photos from years past.

6. Support a Local Photographer Based in Merrimack, NH

When you book your session with a local small business, you’re getting personalized service—and you’re also supporting someone who’s part of your community. We work with high school seniors from Manchester Memorial, Central, West, Bedford High School, Goffstown High School, Merrimack High School, Nashua High School(s), and surrounding schools to make every session unique, fun, and full of heart.

Let’s Make Your Senior Year Unforgettable

Whether you’re bold and adventurous, artistic and quiet, or somewhere in between, we’ll help you design a senior session that’s 100% you. Together, we’ll pick the perfect locations, plan outfits, and create images that celebrate everything you’ve accomplished—and everything that lies ahead.

Why an Engagement Session Is Crucial Before Your Wedding Day

Why an Engagement Session is Crucial Before Your Wedding Day

By: David Hamilton

Date: July 14, 2025

Planning your wedding? Then you’ve likely been asked whether you want to include an engagement session—and maybe you’ve wondered if it’s really necessary.

The answer is a resounding yes—and not just for the pretty pictures.

As a couple of professional wedding photographers in New Hampshire, we’ve photographed countless couples, and one thing is clear: couples who book an engagement session are more relaxed, confident, and connected in front of the camera on their big day. It’s about so much more than Instagram-worthy portraits and the number of likes that follow.

Here’s why an engagement session is one of the smartest investments you can make before saying “I do.”

1. Build a Relationship with Your Photographer

An engagement session gives you and your partner a chance to get to know your photographer before the wedding day. It’s a relaxed, low-pressure environment where we can chat, laugh, and build trust—so when your wedding day arrives, you already feel like you’re working with a friend.

This comfort level makes a huge difference in how natural and genuine your wedding photos turn out. Plus, you get to see how fun we really are in person!

2. Get Comfortable in Front of the Camera

Unless you’re a professional model, it’s totally normal to feel a little awkward during a photo shoot—especially at first. An engagement session helps you get used to being photographed together, try out poses, and understand how small prompts can lead to beautiful, candid moments.

By the time your wedding day arrives, you’ll feel more confident, relaxed, and camera-ready. You don’t want to be caught up in learning what it feels like to be photographed, you should be focused on enjoying your day and the moments throughout.

3. Preview Your Photographer’s Style

Engagement sessions are a great opportunity to experience your photographer’s style in action. You’ll see how we direct, how we capture emotion, and how we use light and location, whether it’s on a cliff in Franconia Notch, or a wooded trail near Manchester, New Hampshire.

After the session, you’ll also receive professionally edited photos that reflect our editing style—ensuring you’re 100% confident in what to expect for your wedding gallery. It’s truly the best way to get a test run of your potential investment in advance of the big day.

4. Create Save-the-Date and Wedding Website Photos

Those beautiful engagement photos aren’t just for show—they’re incredibly practical, too! Besides, when was the last time you got nice photos together?

You can use them for:

  • Save-the-date cards

  • Wedding invitations

  • Your wedding website

  • Guestbook displays or signage

  • Social media announcements

  • Holiday Cards & so much more

They’ll give your wedding materials a personal and cohesive touch, especially when paired with your wedding day aesthetic. Besides, it could be one of the last times you’ll have photos together before getting married. It’ll be a part of your history together over the years!

5. Capture This Unique Chapter in Your Life

Your engagement is a short but meaningful season—it deserves to be remembered. Engagement photos freeze that joyful, in-between time before your marriage begins and shortly after you’ve recognized your commitment to each other.

Whether you’re planning a rustic celebration in the White Mountains or a coastal wedding in Portsmouth, your engagement session captures the anticipation and excitement of what’s to come.

6. Explore Unique New Hampshire Photo Locations

One of the perks of scheduling an engagement session in NH? The endless variety of backdrops. Some of our favorite engagement photo spots include:

  • Cathedral Ledge in North Conway

  • Artist’s Bluff in Franconia Notch
  • Odiorne Point State Park in Rye

  • Downtown Portsmouth for urban charm

  • Autumn foliage in the Monadnock Region

  • Snow-covered woods for a cozy winter session

Choosing a location that fits your personalities makes the experience even more special. If there’s one special to you already, don’t miss the opportunity to document it! Even if it’s a secondary location by request. Our couples have enjoyed honoring the locations where they met or had other memorable experiences together.

Final Thoughts: Say Yes to the Engagement Session

When you invest in an engagement photography session, you’re not just getting pretty pictures—you’re setting yourself up for a smoother, more enjoyable, and more connected experience on your wedding day. It’s one of the most effective (and fun!) ways to prepare for being in front of the camera, and you’ll walk away with timeless images you’ll treasure forever.

Why You Should Take Couple’s Photos Every Year (Not Just for Engagements)

When most people think of professional couple’s photography, they think engagement photos—and that’s it. But there’s something magical about capturing your love story year after year. Whether you’re dating, newly married, or have been together for decades, annual couple’s photo sessions are a meaningful way to document your journey, celebrate your growth, and strengthen your connection.

As a New Hampshire couples photographer, we’ve seen firsthand the value of regular photo sessions. Let’s explore why you should consider making couple’s photos a yearly tradition—not just a one-time event.

1. Celebrate the Everyday, Not Just the Milestones

Life is made up of small, beautiful moments—lazy Sunday mornings, spontaneous hikes in the White Mountains, cozy coffee dates in downtown Portsmouth. These everyday moments are just as worth celebrating as major milestones like engagements or anniversaries.

Annual couple’s photography lets you capture the essence of your relationship as it naturally evolves, making those ordinary moments feel extraordinary.

2. Document Your Growth Together

Over time, your relationship changes. You grow as individuals and as a couple. Maybe you’ve adopted a dog, bought your first home, or taken up a new hobby together. These shifts deserve to be remembered.

A yearly photo session creates a visual timeline of your life together—something you’ll cherish looking back on 10, 20, or even 50 years from now.

3. Strengthen Your Bond

Taking couple’s photos isn’t just about the end result—it’s about the experience. Stepping in front of the camera together encourages you to reconnect, laugh, and simply enjoy each other’s presence.

Many couples tell me their session felt like a mini date. It’s a time to unplug, be present, and focus on each other—something we all need more of in today’s busy world.

4. Update Your Photos (and Social Media Profiles!)

Let’s be honest—how old is the last good photo you have together? Maybe it’s from your wedding, or maybe it’s a blurry selfie from last year’s vacation. With regular photo sessions, you’ll always have fresh, high-quality images to frame, share online, or gift to family.

Bonus: They make great holiday cards or anniversary gifts!

5. Support a Local New Hampshire Photographer

By booking a local couples photo session each year, you’re supporting a small business that’s part of your community. Whether you’re based in Concord, Manchester, Portsmouth, or enjoying a weekend in the Lakes Region, choosing a NH couples photographer helps your local economy thrive.

Capture the Magic of Your Wedding Day with Confidence

Planning a wedding in New Hampshire—or anywhere—comes with countless decisions, but one of the most important is your photography. As a local New Hampshire wedding photographer, I know how much your photos matter. They’re more than images—they’re your legacy. This guide is here to help you plan for breathtaking, stress-free wedding photography that truly reflects your love story.

Whether you’re just starting your planning journey or finalizing the details, this photography-focused guide will walk you through everything you need to know: finding your dream photographer, prepping for your engagement session, building a must-have shot list, and more.

1. How to Choose the Right Wedding Photographer in New Hampshire

Your wedding photos should reflect your personality, style, and all the emotions of the day. Here’s how to find the perfect match:

  • Start early – Top photographers often book 12–18 months in advance, especially during peak wedding season in New Hampshire (late spring through fall). Although, it’s always worth checking no matter when your big day is!

  • Look beyond Instagram – Dive into full galleries on photographers’ websites to see how they capture a full wedding day.

  • Meet in person or virtually – Chemistry matters. You’ll spend more time with your photographer on your wedding day than with anyone else!

  • Ask the right questions – Inquire about backup equipment, delivery timelines, style (photojournalistic vs. editorial), and editing process.

Pro Tip:
Search for photographers using local keywords like “New Hampshire wedding photographer” or “seacoast NH wedding photos” to find the best regional talent.

2. Why You Need a Wedding Photography Shot List

A well-prepared shot list helps your photographer focus on what matters most to you. While experienced professionals know how to capture spontaneous magic, your input ensures nothing is missed.

Include essentials like:

  • Getting ready moments (makeup, dress, rings, details)

  • First look or first touch

  • Family portraits with specific groupings

  • Ceremony highlights (vows, first kiss, walking back up the aisle)

  • Reception moments (toasts, first dance, cake cutting)

At D&S Photo, all of our wedding packages include a planning session and custom wedding shot list so you get everything you’re looking for.

Bonus Tip: Incorporate New Hampshire’s natural beauty into your portraits—whether it’s a lakeside venue, White Mountain backdrop, or rustic barn setting.

3. Book an Engagement Session—It’s More Important Than You Think

An engagement session isn’t just about pretty photos—it helps you get comfortable in front of the camera and build trust with your photographer.

  • Location ideas: Portsmouth, Franconia Notch, Lake Winnipesaukee, or even a cozy in-home session.

  • Style it right: Coordinate outfits, avoid logos, and choose a look that matches the vibe of your wedding.

  • Timing: Schedule during golden hour (the hour before sunset) for the most flattering light.

Engagement sessions also provide beautiful photos you can use for save-the-dates, your wedding website, or reception décor.

4. How to Communicate Your Vision Clearly

The best photos happen when you and your photographer are aligned. Here’s how to make sure you’re on the same page:

  • Share your timeline – Include key moments and buffer time for portraits and travel between locations.

  • Talk about lighting – If you’re planning a late ceremony or indoor reception, your photographer can prepare for low-light conditions.

Provide inspiration—but don’t micromanage – A few Pinterest photos are fine, but trust your photographer’s artistic eye.

5. Confirm the Details Before the Big Day

Avoid last-minute surprises by reviewing logistics in the weeks leading up to your wedding:

  • Finalize your photography timeline

  • Confirm addresses and parking info for all locations

  • Discuss backup plans for rain or unexpected weather (especially relevant in New England!)

  • Share your vendor list so your photographer can coordinate with your planner, DJ, or videographer

Conclusion: Your Wedding Photos Deserve to Be Timeless

Your wedding day will fly by—but your photos will last forever. Investing in a professional, experienced New Hampshire wedding photographer ensures your once-in-a-lifetime moments are preserved with care and creativity.

Winter Photography Tips for New England: Techniques and Gear Essentials

Winter Photography Tips for New England: Techniques and Gear Essentials

Winter Photography Tips for New England: Techniques and Gear Essentials

By: David Hamilton
March 9, 2024

While there may not be some hidden key to success in perfecting every shot, there are definitely some good ways to capture New England’s winter landscapes in your next photo session.

From snowy backdrops to frost-covered details, we’ll equip you with techniques and essential gear recommendations to elevate your winter photography game.

Embrace the Cold

Stay warm and mobile with layered clothing and weatherproof camera gear.

It may seem like common sense but check the weather and dress accordingly! Some thin gloves that allow you to remain mobile are always a good idea, and even hand/feet warmers are a good backup. If you can grab a cheap rain cover for your camera (yes, even if it’s “weatherproof”), it’ll be worth every penny.

Bonus points for bringing extra hand warmers for your subjects!

When it comes to batteries, their lifespan is often much shorter for a single charge. Bring fully-charged backup batteries to make sure you don’t miss a shot.

Lastly, spend some time getting adjusted before your photoshoot. Scope out some locations that might be blocking out the wind, think through ways you can make your clients the most comfortable, and formulate a plan. From here, you’ll be adjusted to the elements and you’ll maximize the time you have before others get too cold and uncomfortable.

Always remember: if your clients are uncomfortable, it will likely show!

Mastering Exposure

Always take a few minutes to get set up and acclimated to your new environment. Once you’ve got your gear out and ready, check your camera settings! It seems like a no-brainer, but make sure you’ve checked your ISO, Aperture, Shutter Speed, focus settings, and remove that relentless lens cap.

You don’t want to be stuck on the same settings after photographing a skyline at night and end up capturing so much noise you need to give a full refund.

With snow, it’s a bit more challenging to capture and takes some thought to get it right. Yes, editing can help after-the-fact, but it’s way better to get it right and avoid over-editing.

Snow is very reflective and makes exposure difficult to anticipate so you’ll want to stay in Manual mode. Matrix metering helps account for exposure throughout the whole image, and setting your white balance to about 8000k is a good starting point. If it’s blue, increase and if it’s pink, dial it down a bit.

Exposure compensation can be a good backup if you’re still struggling to get some quality images with the settings necessary for your environment.

Remember, the goal is to fine-tune your settings as best you can to avoid underexposure and preserve as much detail as possible. Using your histogram can also be helpful in understanding over/underexposure.

Composition Tips

Find and emphasize contrast.

Don’t just stand in an open field covered in snow, there’s no detail! Everything beyond your subjects could be blurry, but adding darker elements to your backdrops make for captivating compositions.

Trees can frame subjects very well, even when out of focus. If you’re in the city, snow-covered architecture can make for an intriguing backdrop. I often start by looking for symmetry or even things that can wrap around the edges of the photo, then test out different apertures to see what feels best. Incorporate leading lines and diagonal compositions can also be a good way to add depth and visual interest.

Feel free to experiment with different perspectives and foreground elements to create compelling winter imagery as well.

Capturing Frosty Details

Winter photography doesn’t always translate to photographing a couple in front of some vast, snow-covered landscape.

Take some time to explore macro photography as well. Some incredible beauty lies in the details, especially right after (or even during) a fresh snowfall. Snow easily creates intricate frost patterns on all kinds of surfaces. Take some time to enjoy and photograph those unique details.

You don’t always need a macro lens to capture the details either. Yes, it can be good to have for the smallest details or even individual snowflakes or ice crystals. Many times, it comes down entirely to perspective. Take some time to experiment with depth of field to isolate the frosty details against soft, blurred backgrounds.

Conquering Low Light

In the golden hours of the day, leverage the soft, warm light while the snow is not reflecting nearly as much light as it would during the middle of the day.

To find the right balance during this time of day, though, it can be helpful to have a tripod (or if you want to be more mobile, a monopod) to ensure you’re able to slow down your shutter speed in low light conditions. You’ll want to make sure your subjects are aware too as motion can make shots blurry rather easily.

One thing to consider is the lens you’re using. Prime lenses and lenses with a wide aperture are invaluable in low light situations. They’re often fast and able to absorb more light even when much less is available without creating very noisy images.

Recommended Gear

Take some time to prepare for a shoot that relies on more trying weather conditions. Giving it some thought can make or break your session.

Here are some critical gear options to consider before your next winter photography session:

  • Weather-sealed camera bodies and lenses for durability in snowy conditions.
  • Wide-angle and telephoto lenses for versatile composition options.
  • Tripods for stability and long exposure shots in low light.
  • Lens hoods and polarizing filters for glare reduction and color enhancement.
  • Hand warmers and weatherproof camera covers for extended shooting sessions in the cold.

Conclusion

Don’t let the cold weather deter you—embrace the season and capture its breathtaking beauty with confidence.

By going into your next session actively thinking about exposure, composition, and low light techniques, you’ll unlock the full potential of winter landscapes and frosty details. Especially in New England, an area of the country bursting with opportunities for a few months of the year.

The Best Photo Locations in New Hampshire: A Comprehensive Guide for Stunning Shots

By: Samantha Hamilton
March 1, 2023

When it comes to choosing a location for your next photo session there are a lot of factors that can be considered. If you don’t have a place immediately in mind, your photographer will have locations they have scouted and can provide suggestions based on the type of session you are booking.

Things to consider when choosing a location:

  • Does it match your vision for the photos?
  • Is there a meaningful location that you would like to have the photos taken?
  • Are there multiple backdrop options?
  • What will the lighting look like during your session?
  • How busy will this location be during your session?

Working closely with your photographer you will be able to find the perfect location for your shoot. They will be able to help you determine a location that will provide the best quality photos that match the vision you may have had in mind.

Some of Our Favorite Locations Across New Hampshire

Ashuelot River Park - Keene, New Hampshire

Only a few minutes from downtown Keene, Ashuelot River Park is much more than meets the eye. At first, it looks like most other city parks but the warmer months provide some vibrant colors throughout the entrance.

Not far beyond the main entrance lies a bridge that goes over a small river and leads to a dam. The bridge provides for some great walking or distance shots, while the dam offers a nice backdrop for posed photos so long as they’re taken from the right angle.

Beyond the bridge, there is a trail through the woods that begins alongside the river. While a cloudy day could provide for some ideal lighting to reduce harsh tree shadows, the trail allows for beautiful candids at a bench or on an adventure through nature.

Stark Park - Manchester, New Hampshire

Don’t let the location fool you, this hidden gem with semi-steep hills provides for a vibrant photo op.

If you’re a history buff, there are a few areas around the park that pay tribute to John Stark such as the statue of the war hero on a horse, some cannons pointing to the horizon, and a cemetery at the bottom of the hill.

Additionally, there are plenty of places to set up shop for a photo session. The large areas of grass and many trees throughout are perfect for outdoor sessions such as portraits (even with studio lighting to compensate for the shadows). Off to one side, a beautiful gazebo exists as well. Although, you may want to be aware of events that may take over the gazebo space.

Bedford Village Commons - Bedford, New Hampshire

Tucked away behind the town’s library, a small park exists that boasts some beautiful man-made scenery in a rather small area.

Just beyond the small parking lot, there is an archway perfect for framing couples and families. And for nature lovers, to the right, there is a small clearing with birdhouses filled with tenants frequently coming and going.

Down a short path, there is a white vinyl bridge that leads to a gazebo. Throughout the year, that gazebo may be decorated depending on the season. We caught it on July 4th covered with festive decorations.

Not far beyond that area leads a gravel path over a small bridge and up to a small pond. It’s a great area for some walking shots and reflections of families exploring the wildlife on the edge of the pond.

Overall, you could hold nearly any type of session here from headshots to elopements.

Livingston Park - Manchester, New Hampshire

New Hampshire is home to a wide variety of wildlife, including moose, black bears, and bald eagles. If you’re an animal lover or wildlife photographer, you’ll find plenty of opportunities to capture these majestic creatures in their natural habitats.

If you’re looking for a nature walk not too far from everything, Livingston is a truly great option. Located near the center of the city, the more than one-mile loop around a pond gives plenty of nature to explore.

Saint Anselm College - Manchester, New Hampshire

If you’re a bit more of a history buff or would prefer to swap a nature walk for architecture and religion, Saint Anselm College is the place for you. To start, Alumni Hall is one of the most beautiful backdrops on campus and given the flow of walking traffic, it’s incredibly easy to get photos without others walking through the background.

Beyond Alumni Hall, there is also the Abbey Church which is beautiful inside and out. Additionally, there are several other buildings and scenic pathways, but there is another area that offers a bit more privacy most days. Just behind the athletic complexes, there are some fields, one of which looks out to an old barn and house owned by the College. This has been perfect for several types of shoots and avoids attention from bystanders (unless athletics has a game on the fields nearby).

Benedictine Park - Bedford, New Hampshire

Tucked away in suburban Bedford is a park with rolling hills and more space than you’ll ever need for a photoshoot. Benedictine Park has been a go-to for many of our past sessions as it gives the perfect, natural backdrop year-round. The most beneficial aspect of it is, no matter how many other people or photographers might be there, there is always another area to take photos semi-privately.

Throughout there are plenty of areas to walk, have a picnic, sit and relax, or even hang out on a stone wall. While it’s not often talked about, Benedictine Park will always be one of our personal favorites for outdoor sessions.

Wagner "Pretty" Park - Manchester, New Hampshire

Out of the many parks throughout central Manchester, “Pretty” Park is often one of the most vibrant. Often flourishing with various types of flowers and greenery, it makes the perfect backdrop for any photo session without traveling too far. Be sure to scope this one out in advance though! While it can be beautiful when the flowers are not maintained or in season, it can be a bit more difficult to work with.

Franklin Pierce University - Rindge, New Hampshire

Rindge has always held a special place in our hearts, but it has the backdrops to prove it’s more than just a small town in southwestern New Hampshire.

The Franklin Pierce University campus boasts some of the most stunning scenery in the area. Pearly Lake and the campus waterfront can give you a completely different sight every night of the year. Looking out over the lake, and above the mountains in the distance, you can often see the sky lit up with fantastic colors second only to the northern lights.

If you travel further onto campus, Peterson Manor lawn offers rolling hills leading directly to Pearly Lake. Going towards the center of campus, you’ll be able to see Mount Monadnock  (the second-most-hiked mountain in the world – just behind Mount Fuji)  unless there is cloud coverage. In addition to these, there are countless trails around campus leading to hidden photo locations.

Artists Bluff - Franconia, New Hampshire

Just into Franconia Notch lies one of the most iconic photo locations. Artists Bluff lies just across from Canon Mountain at the end of a moderate hiking trail. The trailhead is actually located in the Canon Mountain overflow parking lot. At the end of the trail, you’ll find several openings to rock ledges and clearings that overlook the Basin, a small lake surrounded by mountains. On an average day, it’s gorgeous and it changes constantly with the weather. As you get into the fall and foliage becomes increasingly visible, you’ll get some of the most vibrant shots available throughout the Fall season. You may need to be strategic to avoid the crowds during leaf-peeping season, but it’ll be worth every second!

Littleton, New Hampshire

One of the best small towns in New Hampshire is Littleton without a doubt. From the breweries, to the world’s longest candy counter, countless shops, and even the old-fashioned diner food, Littleton is booming with reasons to stop in. It also offers a handful of hidden gem photo locations. A pathway covered with umbrellas leading up to the main streat offers a colorful backdrop for urban photography. Just beyond lies a long, well-maintained covered bridge that overlooks a river and leads to a trail on the opposite side.

We’ve been going here for years and while it may not be an area abundant with locations, it’s perfect for shorter sessions or even headshots.

Lupine Fields - Sugar Hill, New Hampshire

Easily one of the most talked about locations throughout the summer months in New Hampshire is the Lupine Fields. It’s simply a photographer’s dream and offers near perfection located just beyond a small church. A vast field of purple flowers makes for a dreamy backdrop, good for nearly any type of session.

Capturing Memories: A Guide to Your Next Children's Photo Session - What to Expect and How to Prepare

Booking a professional photo shoot with children can be stressful as they can be unpredictable and likely won’t want to sit still during the session. There are a few things that photographers, and parents, can do to make the session more enjoyable for everyone.

Posed isn't always best...

Some of the best shots captured will be candid’s of your child just being themselves. For us, a pose is more of a starting point. Letting the individual show their personality and take it wherever feels the most natural. This always produces incredible images and makes every session unique.

Don’t get caught up in the pose and perfect execution, get caught up in the moments.

Ask questions!

Keeping them engaged is going to keep their focus on the camera.

We’ll often ask about their favorite things to capture their attention. Arriving at a session with these things in mind can truly engage them in front of the camera. Whether it’s an action figure they’ve been attached to, a movie they just saw and can’t stop talking about, or even their favorite candy. The smallest thing can completely change how cooperative they are.

Be sure to ask your photographer questions as well! See what you can prepare leading up to a session, or ask questions throughout on how to be helpful. Open communication and a willingness to help can make a world of difference when it comes to the final images.

A little silliness goes a long way!

Sharing jokes and laughing keeps kids engaged without risking tears.

Being cheery, excited, and downright funny can create a wildfire of candid smiles throughout your session. Yeah, posing and getting a posed smile can be great for a frame or holiday card, but a genuine and meaningful smile tells a story by comparison.

It often wards off bad moods too, which can have an impact on photos. No one wants puffy eyes, a stuffy nose, and a red face in most cases during a regular photoshoot. It can be very tough to avoid in longer sessions, but it’s worth every bit of effort!

Mom and Son

Knowing the time limit.

Kids can’t sit still for long periods of time normally, so we don’t expect them to stay still for an hour-long session or more. It’s best not to push their limits. The session may not have to end there, but being aware of their limits can help get as much as possible out of the session.

With that being said, trying to optimize your child’s schedule as best you can to time their active window with the session. Being grumpy as a result of being hungry or overdue for a nap can make things far more challenging. Having them eat or nap in the car on the way there can be helpful as well.

The main goal: surviving the session with as much time as your child will allow.

They don't always need to smile!

Asking a child to smile for a picture often results in an unnatural pose. It’s best to talk about something they like to bring out a natural smile or reaction rather than forced poses. Chances are if they’re uncomfortable, that will resonate within the final image.

Natural emotion and actions can make for the best photos!

Always know that when booking a professional photo shoot with your children, the photographer is prepared to snap a lot of pictures, as this will provide the most opportunity for successful results.

It’s normal to be worried about how your children will act during a session – just know that your photographer has tricks up their sleeve to make the process easier!

New Hampshire is also home to many charming and historic towns that are perfect for street and portrait photography. Covered bridges aged to perfection also seem to appear throughout the state.

New Hampshire experiences all four seasons, each with its own unique beauty. If you’re timing is right in the fall or winter, you can catch a glimpse of mountains that look like a watercolor painting or even a fresh blanket of snow atop every surface in sight.
